Meet the Seal CluBBers.

I was told seal-clubbing was involved

Seal Cub Clubbing Club is actually a misnomer, for no one told us that seal clubbing was supposed to be done at lower tiers, and not at tier 10. Nevertheless, the name stuck and we exist today as a group of semi-competent casual players who inadvertently found ourselves in Hurricane League and on the rankings. At our core, we are still first and foremost a group of friends playing internet floaty-botes together while complaining about CVs, lack of balance, over-pens, and the ever-elusive RNG. To this day I don’t know what RNG stands for and I’m too afraid to ask.

Over time, we have come to accommodate our overall inflating skill level. Our long-standing goal has been to develop a Clan Wars structure that is both inclusive and competitive at the same time. Finding the balance between the two has provided its challenges, but a good attitude and transparent communication has allowed us flexibility in our approaches from season to season.

We have no de facto clan leader, instead, we have a group of long-time members who deal with minor issues as they arise, and bring to attention anything larger than any individual feels comfortable handling. Everyone gets a say in everything, however, saying something stupid still gets you laughed at.

Clan wars at SCCC.

a casual approach to try-harding

World of Warships is still a game and should be played for pure enjoyment. Whether that bliss is derived from reaching the end of the competitive ladder, the gameplay itself, or simply from hanging out with friends, it’s all the same in our minds. With that said, we have the numbers and skill in our players to accommodate all three. SCCC is the competitive clan, where each season we strive to complain about the new meta, and then evolve our tactics to best exploit it.

SCCC

Entry requirements to the main clan are high, if you want to compete at this level, your fundamentals should be honed to a razor’s edge. Mechanical mistakes and poor individual decision-making will not be tolerated, as each player should be pushing his/her ship to the limits of its capability. Instead, we work on communication and overall strategy. Here we can try new things, make mistakes, and learn from them. With each misplay, not only do we learn from our own mistakes, but we also learn from each other. We have a group of very talented and experienced callers, and can usually field at least two teams every night, more on weekends. We run both ratings at the same time, so everyone gets a chance to prove themselves in a heavily synergistic environment where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Our end goal is not just to get to Hurricane or a certain rating in Hurricane, that comes naturally as the number of games played rises, instead, we focus on creating an environment to expand the number of experienced clan wars players, to establish team member’s confidence in not just themselves, but also confidence that their teammates have their backs.

SCCC2

The Second Clan plays Clan Wars a little differently. Players here are working on refining their mechanical skills and advanced positioning under the tutelage of more experienced SCCC players. In most sessions, at least one experienced SCCC player will be there to run the event with the goals of pushing the comfort zones of team members, familiarize players with the capabilities of their ships in a competitive environment, as well as helping them recognize their mistakes and how to avoid them in future. Most nights we have at least half the teams composed of main clan members who can show the less experienced players what to do in evolving situations. Players who demonstrate a solid grasp of Clan Wars, each ships’ capability envelope as well as sound positioning and decision making will be allowed to transfer to the main clan given qualification in terms of basic stats requirements. There is at least one full team per night.

At the end of the day, it’s still a game.

We do not believe in grinding out wins in order to get to the next league. We impose no obligations on our players to attend Clan Wars, as that is both unfair and diminishes the fun accompanying voluntary involvement - being forced to play a game is beyond ironic. If you have exams or other important real-life commitments and we see you playing Warships as procrastination, we may ban you. We are simply trying to accommodate the realities and wishes of everyone at the same time, and over countless seasons this framework has worked remarkably well for us. As people’s lives change so too may our approaches to competitive play. If so, any major changes will be done under a majority group decision.
